Are Chinese Vending Machines Any Good, or Do They Break After a Year?

Some do break, and the honest number is this: machines shipped from China average a fault about once a month in operation, and ours average about once in three months, with most of those being a settings adjustment rather than a broken part. Those figures come from our own experience across this industry rather than from a study, and we would rather publish them with that caveat than publish nothing. The country is not the variable. What separates a machine that runs for years from one that dies in month eleven is board quality, QC before packing, and whether anyone answers when it goes wrong.

Where the reputation came from

It came from somewhere real. For years the cheapest route into this market was a reseller listing a cabinet built to a price, sold with a warranty nobody intended to honour, and no parts channel behind it. When that machine failed the buyer had a two-metre paperweight and an unanswered email. Enough people had that experience that the whole origin got tarred.

The part that gets lost is that the same country also builds the machines everyone else rebrands. Being made in Guangdong tells you almost nothing about how long a machine lasts, in the same way that being made in Germany does not guarantee it either. The supplier is the variable, not the map.

Two machines, one photo, different lifespans

You can find a machine that looks exactly like ours for noticeably less, and buyers ask us about it constantly. The cabinet is the cheap part. What changes between two visually identical machines is the control board, where the motors were sourced, how the wiring was routed and strain-relieved, whether the mechanism was run through a real test cycle before packing, and whether anyone is going to answer in fourteen months. None of that appears in a listing photo, which is precisely why it is where cost gets removed.

We are not claiming the cheaper machine is always bad. We are saying the difference is real, invisible, and only shows up on a timescale that makes it hard to learn from.

Arrival: the failure everyone forgets to price

A machine that arrives faulty costs more than one that fails in month six, because it fails before it has earned anything and while you are still learning the supplier. A machine that faults twice a year and is back running the same afternoon is more profitable than one that faults once and sits dead for three weeks waiting on a part from a supplier who stopped replying.   • Ask for the failure rate. A supplier who has never seen their machines fail has not shipped many.

  • Ask whether they can connect to the machine remotely. If every fault needs a site visit, budget for site visits.
  • Ask for the certificate with the model number on it, not a logo on a web page.
  • Ask what happens in month thirteen. Parts availability after the warranty is the real durability answer.

The verdict

Chinese vending machines are as reliable as the factory behind them, and the spread between factories is far wider than the spread between countries. Buy from a supplier who will tell you their failure rate, stock parts, answer in your language and take the arrival risk, and the machine is a normal piece of commercial equipment. Buy on price alone from a reseller with no floor and the old reputation earns itself again.
